The Kitchen Series Part I

Posted by on

Old Spitalfields Market is a foodie's dream hangout, filled with tasty treats inspired from all over the globe. We spoke to some of our favourite culinary neighbours from The Kitchens about their delicious offerings.

Yi Fang

Yi Fang’s signature drinks are a sightseeing attraction in their own right. With locations in both Soho & Shoreditch (and even a foothold in Bicester Village!), the Taiwanees fruit tea outlet is a must for any self-respecting bubble tea lover. We spoke to Store Manager Yan Lin to ‘spill the tea’ on Yi Fang.

Tell us a bit about Yi Fang Tea?
Yi Fang originated from the memories of the founder’s childhood in Taiwan. His grandmother would boil fresh pineapples into a delicious drink, a real family favourite. Yi Fang inherits the grandmother’s nickname and secret recipe. Our menu uses seasonal flavours from fresh fruits, with no artificial flavours. It’s a real traditional taste from Taiwan!

Describe your menu in three words.
Fresh, fruity and natural.

Do you have a signature tea?
Our famous Fruit Tea.

If you could only cook one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Chinese food with drinks from Yi Fang.

Do you have any tips for people visiting Old Spitalfields Market? Any hidden gems?

Monty's Deli

Touted as the best Reuben in London by TimeOut magazine, Monty’s is the place to go for a slice of the Manhattan deli lifestyle. Known for their handmade approach; from curing their own meat to the making of their own mustard, Monty’s has amassed a cult following across their three London locations. We dropped by their Old Spitalfields Market stall, to get to know Market Stall Manager Roberto and taste their signature pastrami sandwich.

Tell us a bit about Monty’s Deli?
I discovered my first pastrami sandwich in Manhattan. When I came back to London, I was on the hunt for a similar pastrami. I stumbled on this restaurant that had just opened in Hoxton. I was a regular customer for nearly four months and after some discussions, I then joined them as a chef. I now run the stall, here at the market.

Describe your menu in three words.
Tasty, classic and unique.

Do you have a signature dish?
The Reuben pastrami sandwich.

If you could only cook one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I don’t think I could eat pastrami for the rest of my life, but if I had to, I would.

Do you have any tips for people visiting Old Spitalfields Market? Any hidden gems?
If you come later in the day when it’s quieter you get a chance to meet and chat to the people working at the Kitchen stalls. There’s people from all over the world working here.
